Guest Posting – Why Should You Write On Other Blogs?

  • The author writes an article and shows it to the blogger
  • The blogger decides if the article fits his blog’s topic, if yes he publishes it on the site.

When you share the same niche market as other influential bloggers, and you guest post on their blog, you have the opportunity to reach out to their readers and possibly attract some of those readers to your own blog, thus generating targeted traffic which is very valuable for a successful blog.

Guest bloggers can achieve viral popularity in 2 ways: slow and fast.

The slow way is to build an audience across many blogs. You will gradually spread your influence each blog’s core readers to new ones as they share your work on popular social networking and bookmarking sites.

The fast way requires a lot of hard work and a hint of good luck. If you are able to publish a guest post on a particularly active and popular site, your article could suddenly go viral. Your guest post has the chance to hit the front page of Digg, or get tweeted across the entire blogosphere.

How to Find Guest Posting Opportunities

Guest posting is one of the most effective ways to promote your blog, meet new audiences and build valuable contacts. Therefore most top bloggers guest post, and that’s way if you are a blogger, you should too.

Here are some useful methods you can use to find blogs that offer people the option to guest post for them.

1. Use Google to find guest posting opportunities

Bloggers use different words to invite guest authors to their blog. Some of them directly ask to “submit a (guest) post”, others offer to become their author or to write for them. Even the most simple invitation can be expressed in many different words. This is a list of the most common keyphrases bloggers use to invite people to guest post.

  • “Submit a guest post” / “Submit post” / “Submit blog post”
  • “Add blog post”
  • “Submit an article”
  • “Suggest a guest post”
  • “Send a guest post”
  • “Write for us”
  • “Become an author”
  • “Guest bloggers wanted”
  • “Contribute to our site”
  • “Become a contributor”
  • “Become guest writer”
  • “(Write for our) guest column”

Using quotation marks for these phrases when searching with Google forces the search engine to search for the exact match of that phrase. Otherwise you will get too-general results that randomly mention “guest”, “post”, etc.

how to search for guest posting

If you add some words that describe the topic of your blog you will end up getting tightly relevant results.

Another search operator you can use is the Wildcard operator (*), which in search results gets substitued by one or more words. It is helpful to use this operator because some guest posting invitations are slightly different. Some bloggers may write “Become our contributor” instead of “Become contributor”, or “Send us your guest post” instead of “Send your guest post”. If using only quotation marks than these blogs will be filtered out. Below is an example of how using the wildcard operator enhances your search results.

To go even further in this direction you can use the synonym operator (~) in front of the words that describe the topic of the blogs you want to guest post for. Here is an example: “~money” “submit *guest”. The results for “~money” will also include words like “cash”, “income”, “currency”.

These are the basic methods to search for guest post opportunities with Google. All you have to do is to combine all these tips and of course start searching for your next guest posting opportunity.

2. Join the Guest Blogging Communities

My Blog Guest is a free guest blogging community every guest blogger must join. It organizes guest posting offers and calls to let users find each other.

One of the most effective tools inside MyBlogGuest is the Articles Gallery. Basically it allows members to expose their work to the gallery for blog owners to come to offer their blogs to publish the posts. It gives authors a place to publish their articles for blog owners to come and apply.

    Hi Philip,

I’ve really heard mixed reviews about guest posting. Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of really great bloggers who have built up a great following all from guest posting. For all the reasons you’ve mentioned here. Getting themselves in front of a new audience in their own niche and introducing themselves to new faces. I so get that and I’ve guest posted myself.

I heard one top blogging expert state that you’ll never have any success unless you guest post like crazy and I know for a fact that’s just not true. I built up my following through blog commenting and from there I was invited to start guest posting on other people’s blogs. Now I got some new visitors from those engagements, I won’t lie. But I didn’t get a lot of new loyal followers from them. I still found that even though some of the blogs I was guest posting on were “very” popular, I still attracted a lot more spam then usual.

It is a great way to get recognized I agree but I definitely enjoy building up a following through blog commenting. At least you can look at the content, who they have commenting and decide for yourself if this is someone you want to connect with.

That’s just my opinion anyway but I always appreciate other people’s views on this topic. Guest blogging is still not something I enjoy doing a lot. I mean why share my great content on other people’s blogs when I can share it on my own! :-)

Thanks Philip, I appreciate your post and I do hope you enjoy your day.
